Saturday randomness

Here we are again, Saturday, and my mind is blank when I try to think up a “good” post topic. And then I realized…there are so many random thoughts drifting through my head that it makes more sense to just get them out vs. letting them keep circling.

  • I am completely discombobulated regarding what day it is. Is it Sunday yet? I thought yesterday (Friday) was Sunday. I was convinced of the same today. I blame end of the semester fatigue and, of course, the holiday for this. (Let’s hope it’s not me losing my marbles…)
  • I had a fun adventure to a part of town I’d never seen before. It’s always amazing to me that no matter how long I live somewhere, there are always places that I haven’t seen. I’d say I should get out more, but since we are heading into cozy hibernation season, I think that will have to wait til it warms up again. πŸ™‚
  • Does anyone shop in-store for Black Friday & the weekend sales anymore? I went to Target this morning for a few things and while it wasn’t deserted, it seemed like just a regular Saturday.
  • I started a book in a long-running series that recently changed authors and… I was so disappointed. This was the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child. His brother took over the writing and changed the voice. The books were always in the third person, and now… they’re in the first person. At first, I thought it was just a one-off for the start of the book, but no. It’s consistent throughout. And so, I think my long-running history with this series is now, sadly, done. It was a good run while it lasted. Has that ever happened to you? I know most authors end series, rather than handing them off, but I was hopeful this one would continue to be at least readable. And it wasn’t, at least not for me. πŸ™

And with that, I shall spare you any more of my random thoughts. A slightly pathetic post for a kind of gloomy but still enjoyable Saturday. Be well.

  1. Yay for fun adventures about town. It was fun to see you again and I hope we do get to a do another fun adventure soon, even if it is getting colder. Boo to that! Yay to balloons!

  2. We went downtown to buy some makeup today, it was on sale which doesn’t happen often. Our downtown was HOPPING. Very busy.

I like these randomness type posts, they are fun. πŸ™‚

    1. Oh, interesting! I bet it varies substantially depending on weather, mix of shops/other businesses, etc. And Target – well, part of my “get a few things” was an online order, so there you go. I zipped down to get one additional thing in-store, but otherwise I was in and out in probably under 10 minutes.

  3. I have felt the same way about which day it is! Long weekends are great but confusing. πŸ˜‚

Such a shame about the book series. I can imagine how disappointing that is.

    1. Suzanne, I was really bummed about the book series. I had such high hopes that the brother would keep it mostly the same, perhaps with a bit of a new spin? And… no. Sigh.

I am pretty sure today is Sunday, LOL. πŸ˜‰

  4. I’ve never heard of an author handing a book series off to another author. That sounds bizarre to me. I’m sorry it disappointed you, but I’m not surprised. Hey brother – get your own book idea.

I love the idea of going to a new part of town. Ed goes downtown a lot to hang with friends, and he recently asked if Coach and I had been to some specific area downtown. Um, no, we hadn’t. It sounded like a cool spot, but not sure when Coach and I will venture down there.

    1. I tend to get comfortable in one area/location, and then over time my horizon shrinks, even within the same town. I did a much, much better job when I was a travel nurse – I knew I only had a few months in a location (unless I extended my stay) and so I prioritized getting out and about.
Interesting that Ed – same family, living in the same house for now, I think? – gets to places you do not. We all have our “places”, for sure.

    1. I have never had this issue before – something about this semester is just different from previous Fall semesters. Everyone is insanely stressed and I simply cannot figure out why. It’s not a COVID year, it’s not as if we’re having more meetings… doesn’t make sense, at all!

  5. My husband used to read Jack Reacher so I’m sad to hear that it sounds like the series is at an ending point (or should be at an ending point). My equivalent for that was the Kathy Reichs Bones books. She had the longest streak of writing one really good book every year, which I always saved for vacation. Then she hit a point where the quality just wasn’t there anymore. Sigh.

Yay for local exploring! It’s true that a lot of stuff shuts down over the winter but there are still some gems that are open.

I’ve completely lost track of time and have no idea what day or year it is…I even took a brief internet vacation at some point over this very long weekend. It’s a good time for random posts!

    1. Oh, I didn’t realize that the Bones books had met a similar demise. Sigh, indeed. I love these long-running series but sometimes, well, it’s just time to wrap it up.

Random posts are a lifeline when you are brain-dead, like I have been this weekend. Time to get it going, again, since Monday is here. (Sigh)

  6. I accidentally found myself at a mall on Black Friday…I think it was 2018. I was meeting a friend for coffee and she suggested the Starbucks at the mall, neither one of us remembering for one moment that it was Black Friday until we could barely get into the parking lot. My husband reminds me of this every year if I’m going out. REMEMBER IT’S BLACK FRIDAY.
Black Friday is so weird in Canada because it’s not even our holiday! We have coopted it I guess.

    1. I am laughing, Nicole, at this: “I accidentally found myself at a mall…” because, of all the things that I would do accidentally, going to a mall is not high on the list! OTOH, you were meeting a friend, and it wasn’t your idea, so there is that.

I bet Black Friday is weird. Coopting it seems like a reasonable step – why not? Take advantage of American greed. πŸ˜‰

  7. I did not shop in store and barely online. I am glad Target was not nuts.

What a bummer about that book series. I bet many feel that way!

    1. I did order a few things – but will return one of two options for a jacket that I wanted. Nothing crazy.
I was super-bummed about the book series. And, judging from the comments on the book online, many others were in the same situation. Sigh.

  8. I went to Target on Friday morning and felt the same – just a regular day, didn’t feel like Black Friday at all. I think most people have resorted to online shopping, especially because the deals are available all week.
P.S. I wanted to let you know that I noticed that you pretty much are doing NaBloPoMo without officially committing to it. How does it feel to just show up in this space every day? πŸ™‚ (Pssst, I love it.)

    1. I think you’re right – I online shopped, and then just picked up at Target (well, save for one thing that in hindsight I didn’t need to buy but oh, well…).
And, um, you’re right. Ha. I was thinking about that this morning. It’s fun to show up more often, to be honest. My posts aren’t all in-depth musings, and…that’s okay. I can post about my exasperation (as I did this morning), and make it pretty short, or I can write a longer post on a more in depth topic. I’m glad you are liking it. πŸ™‚

  9. I really don’t feel like Black Friday is a thing anymore, but I was at an outdoor shopping center on Monday afternoon and it was SO BUSY. I was like, “Aren’t people supposed to be at work?!” It was nuts.

The Jack Reacher thing is such a bummer. I can’t believe he just changed POVs like that. Dude, NO. That’s not okay! Ugh.

    1. OK, that is super-weird about people being out on Monday. WFH flexibility FTW? (How many acronyms can I squeeze into a sentence? HA!)
And thank you for validating my what the HECK response to the change in voice. Um, no. Definitely NOT okay. I DNF’d, which made me sad.
